Harness favourite gallops to throw away certain victory at Hamilton
Trotting mare Keayang Gucci ($2.40 fav) was sauntering home to successive victories on Monday when a dramatic twist flipped the script.
Out clear of the pack when turning for home in the Matthews Petroleum Trot (2160m) at Hamilton in country Victoria, the Paddy Lee-trained 4YO was looking to back up her maiden win at Geelong on Anzac Day.
Keayang Gucci had all-but put the race to bed when she galloped, giving driver Glen Craven an almighty headache as the field descended around them.
She ended up finishing 57.5m behind the winner, Shadow Justice ($26) - a 9YO who has now claimed half his 10 career victories in the past nine months.
Shadow Justice's luck, of course, came at the misfortune of Keayang Gucci, called suitably by the voice of Victorian harness racing, Dan Mielicki.
"It's galloped! Oh my goodness gracious me, it was a mile in front, and galloped," Mielicki exclaimed.
"In what was one of the more boring races ever, its become exciting and Keayang Gucci, supposed to be top-end fashion Gucci, but it was absolutely ripped apart seam by seam.
"It galloped on the turn when looking a certain winner, and has ran last."
